CHAPS Payments

Make fast, high value payments with confidence.

Same day payments for high value transfers

We offer CHAPS for high value, time critical UK payments that need to arrive the same working day.

What is CHAPS?

CHAPS, or Clearing House Automated Payment System, is a secure and reliable way to send high-value or time-critical payments within the UK. Unlike Bulk Faster Payments which have a daily limit, CHAPS allows you to transfer any amount on the same day, as long as your request is submitted before our 2:30pm cut-off time.

How can CHAPS help my business?

  • No transaction limits: CHAPS has no upper limit on the amount of money you can transfer, unlike other payment services.
  • Send payments quickly: Funds arrive on the same working day if submitted before 2:30pm.
  • Security: Payment requests can be set up to require single, double, or triple authority approval, depending on your business needs.

How does CHAPS work?

A CHAPS payment works like a regular bank transfer, moving money between two accounts, but it’s typically used to high-value or time-critical payments.

  • Payments authorised before 2.30pm Monday to Friday will be processed and available on the same day.
  • Payments authorised after 2.30pm Monday to Friday will be debited and sent on the next working day. These payments will be shown in ‘Scheduled Payments’ until they are sent.

All payments are made subject to funds being available. All payments go through our internal fraud and Anti-Money Laundering checking processes which may delay the debit being applied in certain circumstances.

What’s the difference between Bacs, Bulk Faster Payments and CHAPS?

Depending on your business needs, one of our other payment services may be more suitable for you. For a side-by-side comparison of Bacs, Bulk Faster Payments and CHAPS, including speed, costs and typical use cases, see our Payment Services comparison table.

How much does CHAPS cost?

There is a fee of £25 for each CHAPS transfer, reflecting the speed and security of this service.

For more details of our fees and charges, please see our Standard Service Tariff.
