Unity Trust Bank

‘People helping people to help themselves’, is the motto of the credit union movement and Unity Trust Bank has demonstrated its commitment to this ethos by awarding £1,000 to MoneyWise Newcastle Credit Union.

The grant came from Unity’s Credit Union Development Fund.  This innovative fund, created in 1989 has put over £90,000 into the movement through grants to individual credit unions.

Supporting the development of credit unions has always been a key area for Unity Trust Bank as part of its commitment to tackling the effects of financial and social exclusion.  

The Bank’s support for credit unions is even more important in these times of financial uncertainty and it is encouraged by the new coalition Government’s backing for the movement.  Indeed, Mark Hoban, Chief Secretary to the Treasury said on 30th June “We are determined to help credit unions grow and expand into the future. This Government believes that strong credit unions will greatly enrich British society, so it is in our interest to do whatever we can to help the credit union movement to prosper.” 

Andrew Breese, the CEO of MoneyWise said, “We are delighted that our application for a grant from Unity’s Credit Union Development Fund was successful.  The grant is to be used to support our strategic move to high street premises and to replace our stationary such as letterheads and compliment slips. We are determined to increase our membership this year and the grant will significantly contribute to us fulfilling that goal.” Adding. “I would like to thank Unity on behalf of all our current and future members for ensuring our continued financial success.”

Karen Gorman, Unity’s Development Manager for the Newcastle area said “I am pleased that the Credit Union was awarded a grant from our Development Fund.  Credit Unions play a vital role in community cohesion but their work goes largely unrecognised and unreported and I hope these grants can play a small part in publicising the excellent work that they do.”
